Stone Studies

A study in stone, light and the quiet drama of the natural world.

A large geode with a striking cluster of amethyst crystals, featuring shades of purple and a tall, layered mineral formation standing prominently in the center. The geode is displayed on a stand in a dimly lit room, with reflections visible in the glass behind it.
A close-up view of polished stones or minerals, featuring a range of earthy tones such as brown, green, and orange. The stones have a smooth, shiny finish, and some exhibit a marbled pattern.
A large, rough, dark-colored rock is suspended in mid-air, intersected by a thin, transparent circular disc. The rock has various textures and shades of brown and gray, highlighted by focused lighting that accentuates its irregular surface.
A detailed, close-up view of a dark fossil with intricate spiral patterns, placed on a flat surface. In the blurred background, a digital style display showing the number '00' is partially visible, adding a contrast between the ancient object and a modern element.
A large mineral specimen with clusters of dark, blackish rocks interspersed with shiny pyrite crystals and white quartz. The specimen sits on a wooden surface with a white paper underneath. Various textures are visible, including rough, jagged edges and smoother, rounded mineral formations.
A collection of various rock and mineral specimens displayed on wooden slabs. Each specimen is labeled with its name, such as 'Fluorite' and 'Calcite.' Several magnifying glasses are placed near the specimens, suggesting a focus on examination and study. The backdrop includes a grassy area, adding a natural setting to the exhibit.
The image features a detailed pattern of natural rock formations with parallel lines and layered textures. Shades of brown, beige, and black give the surface a rugged, weathered look, with visible variations in color due to sedimentation.
A single geode displaying a rough, uneven surface covered in clear and white crystals. The geode is placed on a light, neutral background which enhances its crystalline texture and form.

Earth’s Artistry

At geology.org.uk, nature’s artistry takes form in meteorites, minerals and fossils—each specimen a record of deep time, presented with the care of a gallery piece.

A large geode section reveals a sparkling, crystal-studded interior with a dominant purple hue. The geode is illuminated, enhancing the glittering effect of the crystals. It is displayed in a museum setting, with exhibits visible in the background under soft lighting.
